Ash Wednesday begins our journey to Easter and is the start of the holy season of Lent, when the church turns its face toward the cross and the promise of the resurrection. At Grace, we will gather in a quiet and solemn service to hear scripture, confess our sins, and receive ashes in the sign of the cross on our foreheads.
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” is not meant to condemn us. It is a tender reminder that our lives are fragile and precious, and that God meets us in our weakness with mercy and new life.
All are welcome to this service, whether you are a long time Episcopalian, from another tradition, or just curious. Children and newcomers are very welcome.
Come begin Lent with us in prayer, in honesty, and in hope.
Ash Wednesday at Grace
Shrove Tuesday is the Church’s last feast before Lent begins, a night for good food, laughter, and a clean start. Traditionally, Christians were “shriven,” meaning they prepared their hearts for Lent through honest self examination, repentance, and prayer, then used up rich foods at home before the fasting season began. It is also connected with the practice of “Mardi Gras,” which is French for Fat Tuesday and is usually celebrated with a carnival.
We invite you to feast with us on Tuesday, February 17th at 6:00 p.m. at our Pancake & Pajamas Party supporting Grace Scouts! There are no tickets, just donate whatever you are able and feel called to.
